How to Buy JDM Fishing Tackle from Mercari & Yahoo Auctions Japan (2026 Guide)

Updated October 21, 2026 · Written from Saitama, Japan, by a seller who buys used reels on these platforms every week

Japan's two big second-hand marketplaces, Mercari and Yahoo! Auctions, are where most used Japanese reels and discontinued lures change hands. Neither was built for overseas buyers, but in 2026 there are three practical ways in. Here is which one to use, what it really costs, and the Japanese words you need to read a listing without getting burned.

The short answer
  • Mercari, from the US: try Mercari's own Mercari Global App first. It launched in the US on June 17, 2026, and you buy directly with no proxy in the middle.
  • Yahoo! Auctions, from anywhere: use a proxy service. Yahoo! Auctions needs a Japanese payment method, and it has been blocked in the UK and the EEA since April 6, 2022.
  • Which proxy: Buyee charges a flat ¥500 per order; ZenMarket charges ¥800 per item for Mercari and auction purchases. Buying several items? Buyee's per-order fee usually wins.
  • Used reels: no proxy tests a reel for you. Read the condition words below, and pay for extra photos when in doubt.

Step by step: buying a used reel through a proxy

  1. Search in Japanese. Paste the model name in katakana (table below). English names miss most listings.
  2. Read the title and condition before the price. Handle side, "reel only" and "junk" are often only in the title.
  3. Check the seller's shipping line. 送料無料 means shipping inside Japan is included; 着払い means you pay it on arrival at the proxy's warehouse.
  4. Bid or buy through the proxy. For auctions, set your maximum once and leave it. Popular reels are bid up in the last minutes, so bidding early only pushes the price up.
  5. Ask for photos when it matters. ZenMarket's photo service is ¥500 for three photos. They will not confirm that a reel works, and they will not take it apart.
  6. Consolidate and ship. Combine items into one box, then choose the shipping method. Faster methods cost noticeably more for the same weight.

The Japanese words that matter on a reel listing

JapaneseReadingWhat it means for you
新品 / 未使用shinpin / mishiyōNew / unused. "Unused" may still be out of the box.
美品 / 極美品bihin / gokubihinClean / very clean. This is the seller's opinion; check the photos.
中古 / 傷ありchūko / kizu ariUsed / has scratches
シャリ感shari-kanA slight grainy feel when winding, usually bearings. Common, and it lowers the price.
ゴリ感 / ゴロgori-kan / goroA rough, grinding feel. Can be gears. Treat as a repair job.
本体のみhontai nomiReel only: no box, no spare parts
箱付き / 元箱hako-tsuki / motobakoComes with the original box
右ハンドル / 左ハンドル(RIGHT / LEFT)migi / hidari handoruRight- / left-hand retrieve. Check this twice: most 22 Aldebaran BFS XG sales we tracked were left-hand.
動作確認済みdōsa kakunin-zumiThe seller says it was checked and works
ジャンクjankuJunk / for parts. No claims accepted. Skip unless you repair reels.
ノークレーム・ノーリターンnō kurēmu nō ritānNo claims, no returns

Search terms for popular JDM reels

Copy these into the marketplace search box. Add the year prefix to avoid older models: "22アルデバラン" finds the 2022 Aldebaran, not the 2012 one.

What used JDM reels actually sell for in Japan

These are finished Yahoo! Auctions sales from July to October 2026, which we tracked for our own buying. They are prices paid to the seller, before any proxy fee, international shipping or import duty.

ReelUsed sales (3 months)Typical price
Daiwa 24 Certate LT4000-CXH57Median ¥37,400; reel-only units ¥27,800–28,580
Shimano 22 Aldebaran BFS XG22Median ¥26,870 (mostly left-hand)
Shimano 21 Calcutta Conquest 100HG21Median ¥36,000
Shimano 23 Vanquish C5000XG8 since AugustClean units ¥37,000–42,000

Condition moves the price a lot. On the same model, a clean boxed reel and a scratched reel-only unit can be ¥10,000 apart, so compare like with like.

Before shipping, that is about ¥44,160. Compare it with the same reel's delivered price on eBay before you commit.

Mistakes that cost money
  • Batteries and sprays. Electric reels, fish finders and spray lubricants can be refused for air shipping. ZenMarket even charges a fee to dispose of batteries.
  • Long rods. Check your shipping method's length limit before bidding on a one-piece rod. Multi-piece rods are far easier to ship.
  • No cancellations. Once a Mercari or auction item has been bought, you generally cannot cancel it, even if it arrives at the warehouse looking worse than the photos.
  • Storage clock. ZenMarket stores items free for 60 days and then charges ¥50 per item per day. Do not leave items there while you wait for more wins.

When eBay is the better choice

Proxies are cheapest when you know exactly what you want and can judge condition from photos. If you want a reel that has been wound and checked by hand, a single delivered price and a return option, buying from a Japan-based eBay seller is often worth the difference. That includes us.
