Buying Used Japanese Fishing Reels in the UK, EU & Australia (2026): Taxes, What Sells and How to Buy
Most guides to buying Japanese tackle assume you live in the US. If you are in the UK, Europe or Australia, the taxes work differently, some Japanese marketplaces are harder to reach, and the reels people buy are different too. Here is what applies to you in 2026.
- UK: on orders of £135 or less, eBay charges UK VAT at checkout. Above £135, VAT and any duty are collected when the parcel arrives.
- EU: on orders of €150 or less, VAT is charged at checkout. Since July 1, 2026, there is also a flat €3 customs duty per item. Above €150, VAT and duty are collected on delivery.
- Australia: on items of A$1,000 or less, eBay collects 10% GST at checkout.
- Yahoo! Auctions is blocked in the UK and the EEA (since April 2022), and Mercari's Global App does not cover these regions yet. Use a proxy, or buy from Japan-based eBay sellers.
Taxes by region
| Region | Low-value order | Higher-value order |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | £135 or less: UK VAT charged by eBay at checkout | Over £135: import VAT (and any duty) collected on delivery, usually with a carrier fee |
| European Union | €150 or less: VAT at checkout, plus €3 duty per item type (Jul 2026 – Jul 2028) | Over €150: import VAT and duty collected on delivery |
| Australia | A$1,000 or less: 10% GST collected by eBay at checkout | Over A$1,000: GST and any duty assessed at the border |
The EU's €3 duty is charged per type of item in a parcel, not per piece. Five identical lures count once; a reel and a spool count twice.
What actually sells in the UK and Australia
We compared eBay sales over the last 90 days (items over $80). In the US, Japanese bass baitcasters dominate. In the UK and Australia, buyers want saltwater spinning reels.
| Reel family | UK sales (avg) | Australia sales (avg) |
|---|---|---|
| Shimano Stella | 39 ($500) | 36 ($538) |
| Shimano Twin Power | 43 ($289) | 27 ($352) |
| Daiwa Saltiga | 14 ($529) | 27 ($455) |
| Daiwa Certate | 11 ($407) | 25 ($379) |
| Shimano Calcutta Conquest | 15 ($428) | 23 ($381) |
| Shimano Vanquish | 16 ($382) | 3 |
| Metanium / Antares / Steez | 1–5 | 0–3 |
Two things stand out. Australia pays more than the US for the Certate ($379 vs about $327), and there are fewer sellers competing. And outside the Calcutta Conquest, Japanese bass baitcasters barely sell in either market.
Before you buy a used spinning reel for saltwater
- Ask whether it has been used in saltwater (海水で使用しましたか?). Salt damage is the biggest risk with used spinning reels.
- Look for white crust around the bail, line roller and screws. That is dried salt, and it often means corrosion inside.
- Check the size. Japanese listings use the same size numbers as international models (C3000, 4000, 8000 and so on), but the gear-ratio suffixes vary by year. Confirm the exact model before you bid.
Where to buy from outside the US
- eBay, from Japan-based sellers: the simplest option. VAT or GST is handled at checkout, and eBay's Money Back Guarantee covers items that don't arrive or aren't as described.
- A proxy (Buyee, ZenMarket): the only way into Yahoo! Auctions from the UK or the EEA. You pay the proxy fee and international shipping, then VAT and duty as above.
