📝 Editor's Take Seven reports, forty-four fish - the Coelacanth 4" produces more bass per outing than almost anything in our data, and unlike most high-rate baits it does it at three different lakes. Nanairo and Mishima account for three reports each, Sagami the seventh, so this is not one guide's home-water trick. The season split is the interesting part: four of the seven land in the spawn, two in early summer, one in fall. Average water temperature was 68F. Depth runs shallow - three reports under three feet, two more in three to ten - and the pattern tags read spawn-related and shallow cruisers. That is a bait being fished slowly at visible fish in warm, shallow water, not dragged blind. The biggest was 21.7 inches. Japanese anglers throw it on a 6'4"-6'8" UL-to-L rod with a high-gear baitcaster and 12-16lb fluorocarbon, which is a light rod on heavy line - the setup you use when you need to feel a soft bite but still turn a fish that eats it next to cover. If you fish clear water in spring and keep missing bedded or cruising fish, this is the shape that gets eaten.
