Lake Biwa is Japan's largest freshwater lake and the birthplace of modern Japanese bass fishing. Stocked with Florida-strain largemouth in the 1970s, it has produced giants over 26 inches and fueled decades of JDM tackle innovation. The south basin (Nango) is the main tournament zone — shallow, weedy, and brutally pressured, which is exactly why Japanese pros have developed some of the world's most refined finesse and big-bait techniques here.
Biwa is where Japanese bass fishing technique was born. Pros like Hiroaki Namiki, Hiroshi Ogawa, and international anglers including MLF pro Takahiro Omori have all sharpened their edge here. The weed-and-hard-bottom structure, heavy angling pressure, and giant fish have pushed rod and soft-bait technology further than almost any other fishery on earth.
Biwa is the proving ground for premium JDM tackle. If a rod, reel, or soft bait works here under extreme pressure, it works anywhere. deps (based in Shiga) built its entire big-bait reputation on Biwa giants. Daiwa Steez and Shimano Stella spinning setups were refined by local pros fishing 3-lb finesse on 6-lb fluorocarbon in crystal-clear south-basin shallows.
Rental boats widely available from multiple shops around Nango (south basin). Boats launch from Moriyama, Otsu, and Kusatsu areas. No special fishing license required beyond standard Japanese fishing license.
